Thiamine acts as a cofactor for the metabolism of glucose and may have a role in nerve transmission. Vitamin B12 is necessary for DNA synthesis and affects the development of red blood cells, normal myelination (covering) of nerve cells, and the production of neurotransmitters. Like other B vitamins, both riboflavin and niacin act as cofactors for enzymes involved in metabolism.
